HEINSIGHT – RECOGNITION OF REALITIES AFTER ITS OCCURRENCE

I recently got to see some amazing pictures taken by a killer skateboard photographer Werner Lemprecht of Hein Kotze’ and I just had to catch up with him and see what makes him shred…

KDT:  Hein Kotze’ can you tell us a little about yourself and your breakdown in the world of skateboarding?

HK:  I guess it’s quite a cliché by now, but one day I saw a few of the older guys in my primary school flipping this huge (back then it seemed huge) 2-stair gap.  I was super stoked, and used to sit there for hours even though nobody ever really landed it.  After that day a few guys and me picked up a “Wasp” setup from Makro.  This was the start of endless Fridays, running over into Saturdays, skating sessions.  Nobody had cars, so we used to walk…and I mean WALK.  Especially when Werner Lamprecht and me started skating together.  Our regular Friday-spot (and closest) was about 4km from where we stayed (seemed like 100km, after having to climb a mountain of a street, to the top of one hill on your way back).  Every single Friday we were in this guy’s yard skating the most perfect box and bank setup.  Even after he had moved we would jump the gate and chill there the entire afternoon.  Since then I couldn’t get over the feeling of landing a new trick, perfecting an old one, or getting excited over a new loading-bay filled with weeds that need cutting and surfaces in need of sweeping.

KDT:  So, how was your summer? What did you get up to?

HK:  It was EXCELLENT!

Had my first holiday for the entire year and caught up on some, really essential, habits; sleeping until 13h00, skating until 19h00, chilling with my girlfriend till 1 AM.  Now that’s the life…ha-ha.

Oh yeah! We went to Margate for a week as well…that was rad.

We got some mad pics, made some new friends and forgot about the reality that is; “the working life”

Now that’s a holiday in its true form.

KDT:  How do you manage to keep on top of your work when you spend so much time skating?

HK:  My work IS skating…or anything that was influenced by it – if I look at it like that I will pretty much enjoy anything I do.

I must admit that 2009 was a mad-scramble of a year.

February I heard that my application for a bursary was denied, and thus ended my student life in one sentence.  I had to find a job, had to start paying my own things etc.  Crazy.   I wanted to do photography.

I decided, as in skating, that it’s something you can pretty much learn by yourself (with some advice from others) - and thus started playing more with photography and design.  Up to the point where, after only one year (and no qualification behind my name), my own business card says; photographer/graphic designer.   And through it all skating has been one the main sources of new ideas/media/inspiration.

You’ll always find time to do what you like, as long as you on like what you do.

KDT:  What’s the best way to go about becoming a good skateboarder?

HK:  Depends on what your definition of “good” is I guess.  To me it’s doing something as simple as a bs-180 off a ramp, landing it 100 times…and then, finally, landing it perfect.  I’d like to think that a good skateboarder does it for himself.

KDT:  What’s the best experience you’ve had while skateboarding?

HK:  To many to count, to many stories to tell, to many great friends to mention all.

Recently: winning the game-of-skate at the Slip Skate Co launch event.  It was the first contest I’ve ever entered, and I was surprisingly nervous.  Me, Werner and two other guys were in the final.  The game went on and JJ and me were the only survivors.  That guy has got some mad style, and it was quite intimidating each time he made my tricks look effortless. We went on for, what seemed like, forever.  The crowd was cheering each time someone set a mad trick, and freaked out even more when the opponent managed to equally nail it.

It was INSANE.

At the end I managed to land the most perfect nollie-bigspin-flip (one of those tricks you “have landed before”, but only hope to land as a last resort). Again JJ got insanely close to actually landing a trick you can see he has probably never tried before…but to no success. I was finally declared winner, and received my first “brand-new” deck in probably a year’s time.  I was super stoked and equally brain-dead after planning what to do next every time JJ missed a set.

bin ollie-pi Werner Lamprecht

KDT:  Your photography is awesome, what advice do you have about capturing that right moment?

HK:  Again it’s about; if you’re doing what you love, it will come naturally.

Each moment is different, and each photo is opinion based. Werner and me will sometimes spend half an hour shooting a pic after finally agreeing on where we want it taken from, how the exposure must be etc. A very important thing is knowing your camera and lenses.  Each one is different, and each one makes an image look different.  In theory they must all work the same, but from my experience this is not the case at all.  My settings/focal length etc. can be identical to Werner or Reuben’s, but you’ll still end up with three images that look completely different.

SK8AFRICA 2009 COFFEE TABLE BOOK

Author: Kevin Du Toit

The idea of coming up with a Skateboard Coffee-Table Book was easy as it stemmed from doing something unique and different to support the skateboarding industry we have in South Africa.  2009 has been a challenging year and a lot has happened so why not finish it off with a BANG!!!

I’m a big advocate of the local skaters for all of their support, comments and feedback that has come to SK8Africa, I want to sincerely thank you.  SK8Africa is fast becoming the go-to magazine for current news, events, videos, pictures and product launches…

Werner Lamprecht was our first featured South African skater, who is also an amazing photographer and so we approach Werner about shooting the cover, he gladly accepted.  Each coffee-table book will have the customers personalized name printed on the inside when an order has been placed.
This is a non-profit print of the coffee-table book.  I am doing this out of my passion for skating and it only covers the cost of publishing and shipping and is not for public sale and only personal use.  If you do not consent to us using your content – no problem as we’re happy to fill the 29 pages with other featured content.

SLIP SKATEBOARDS – TAKING SA SK8BOARDING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Author: Kevin Du Toit

I am so devoted to skateboarding in South Africa that having to wait in anticipation to hear back from Alwyn Van Niekerk (founder of Slip Skate Co.), so that SK8Africa could make the announcement about the NEW line of Slip Skateboard Decks, Trucks and Wheels was killing me.  This is what I expect to see from SA Skaters, their own brands because nothing happens until somebody brands something, and who knows this better than the Americans.

Now South Africans like, Alwyn Van Niekerk, are building their own quality brand, Slip Skateboards, that carries with it a true persona, and the beliefs and experiences similar to those in the United States and that is why Slip Skateboards is rising to a new level.  Slip Skateboard decks, trucks and wheels aren’t just another product – but a brand, and that is something to be proudly South African about.

KDT:  Keeping at the forefront by checking in with Alwyn on the launch date of Slip Skate Co. new decks, trucks and wheel, also gave me the insight into Alwyn’s consistent message about the value in building a solid and strong brand;

ALWYN: While we were planning our next product range we realized that we had a great opportunity to build a strong brand for Slip Skate Co and it’s products.  We started off by completely redesigning the official company logo to move away from the death and macabre feel of the first range, and to create a unique logo that better suits the overall feel and direction of the company.

When our designer, Hein Kotze, showed me the first version of the black & white barcoded logo I really didnt buy into it at all, as it was completely different from the initial ideas I had for our logo and the next range, but that logo quickly grew on all of us and it became our official company logo and ultimately set the tone for the designs for the entire product range.

Slip_Exclusive

“Branded” was the first deck design inspired by the new logo and it got an immediate “sick dude!” reaction all round. The black & white colours and deck-sized logo has a minimalistic boldness that just completely gets in your face while looking great as well.

“Aspire” was the next piece of sheer genius from Hein. When we initially chatted about it I really pictured something completely different, but that design really just speaks volumes when you look at it. Once again the black & white colour scheme really sets it apart from anything else out there, and those hands…

“Razed” was to be something completely different from Branded and Aspire. It has such an unexpected natural balance brought about by the centerpiece logo with the chaotic, hard lines on the nose and the smooth, curvy trails coming off the company name onto the tail of the deck.

We reused the barcode logo on the wheels and truck designs in a discreet, complimentary manner that wouldn’t detract from the awesome deck decsigns, while still fulfilling our branding requirements.

The vision with this product range was to establish Slip Skate Co as a strong brand in the SA skating industry with some of the most innovative and creative designs to compliment the proven quality of our products. We really feel that we’ve created a complete product range which is not only awesome enough to stick on your wall as a design masterpiece, but also has all the hardcore qualities skaters demand.

Now that is what I’m talking about, Alwyn has set the standards high for Slip Skate Co and created quality with excellence.  Slip Skate Co has also kicked up the website a notch @ http://slipskateco.com/

JO’BURG LONGBOARDERS CLUB – SKATE SKATE SKATE EVENT

Hi Sk8Africa,

Here is a cool event that is being sent by Lloyd Clark, this dude does some seriously downhill skating that I have to admire.  Here is the link to some of the Jo’Burg Longboarders Club and facebook group, please check out their videos as well.  Lloyd, keep it up man.

From Lloyd – Ahoy Boardriders,

Summer is here and with it plenty of skate sessions! Awe!

Just over 2 weeks to go until the Schanskop Mission of the Year so I hope you’ve all diarized the 21st of November. This really is going to be a massive session on a closed road (well, almost closed) so bring your mom.

The 15th of November (next Sunday) is Cycle Challenge Sunday which means closed roads!  Wahoo!  Skating will be happening with or without hangovers, we can’t let this opportunity slip. First we’ll be hitting Jan Smuts near the Johannesburg Zoo and once all the cyclists have passed we’ll move on to Kylami for the rest of the day. For those of you who don’t know, these roads are super steep, super smooth and dead straight. This is your once a year opportunity to ride them.

To keep it extreme until then, Mass and I will be bombing Sandton Drive at sunrise (5am) this Sunday and the Pretoria guys will be coming through for a session at The Winelands at 10 am.  Give us a shout if you’re keen for either of these.

Keep skating, be safe and always be awesome.

THIRD DAY – HEADS FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Glamorous Productions are proud to announce that world-class award-winning Rock Band Third Day will tour South Africa in November 2009.  This is the first for the band to reach our shores, and will prove that Christian Rock is a force to be reckoned with.  They are currently the top-selling Christian Rock Band in World.

THIRDDAY_LIVE

Recently, Third Day celebrated its first American Music Award win in the Contemporary Inspirational category.
Lead singer Mac Powell said What an unbelievable honor to win an award in a category with such great friends. This is our first AMA win and it means so much to us because its voted on by fans and we are certain we have the best fans anyone could ever ask for.  Thank you for this tremendous honor.

Multi-platinum-selling rock band Third Day has played to millions of fans in numerous sold-out arenas around the world. Its garnered 24 No. 1 singles across multiple formats not to mention armloads of Grammy and Dove Awards. Yet the bands willingness to struggle openly before fans and critics alike to unearth its identity, purpose and mission stands as Third Days most valued accomplishment during its first decade together.  Backing up the band’s ascent, Billboard magazine noted the act is “not only one of the best Christian bands of the ’90s but one of the best rock bands, period.

Third Day has clearly weathered the difficult climb from obscurity to success, but the band is hardly suffering from over-confidence or complacency.  In fact, the bands eleventh album, Revelation, addresses that very issue head-on. Rather than lean back in a figurative easy chair, Third Day challenged itself immensely, shaking up its direction and reasserting its place as a rock band of enormous depth and passion.

Our career is like a dream I didnt even know I had, drummer David Carr says. Its gone beyond anything I could have dreamed of.

During the past 15 years, Third Day has built an impressive career.  The Georgia-based band has won 23 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, four GRAMMY Awards, earned two consecutive American Music Award nods, and multiple ASCAP honors for their songwriting skills.  Their catalog of hits has helped define the Christian radio landscape for more than a decade while the band scored 24 No. 1 singles and sold more than six million albums.
Success has also earned them respect and admiration from other artists, and Revelation, the bands 11th studio album, features some intriguing collaborations. Pedal steel guitar phenomenon Robert Randolph adds his distinctive flair to the raucous Southern-fried anthem Otherside, also Chris Daughtry, a longtime Third Day fan, adds his unique voice on the somg titled Slow Down and Flyleafs Lacey Mosely lends her beautiful vocal the poignant ballad, Born Again.

Third Day will perform at the Wave House, Gateway on Thursday 5th of November at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now at R150 for general and R250 for golden circle, at the Wave House; DIVA Pavilion and Hillcrest KwikSpar.

build a ramp

I always wanted to have my own back-yard ramp or even just a 1/4 pipe in the driveway but never knew how to make it happen.  So after skating my buddies 16ft wide – 4ft high backyard ramp I got on a mission to find out how tot do it right.  i didn’t just want to slap something together so I did some research (google) of course, sometimes the internet does my thinking for me and found this cool site.

BUILD A RAMP has everything and anything you need to know in regards to building any kind of ramp or box.  ANd, yes plz do me a favor and submit all pics, videos and updates on your ramp so that we can share it with all the SK8Africa readers.

ELEMENT’S Flatlight Construction

Bryce and Garric recently asked me to tryout and review the construction and board feel with one of Element’s new Flatlight decks. Flatlight is a premium 7 ply construction pressed in a softer concave mold with lower nose and tail angles and more flat behind the trucks which is supposed to aid in quicker responding ollies and nollies.

The board takes a little bit of getting used to especially with flat ground tricks
since its nose and tail are mellower than most boards. After skating the Flatlight board for a while I actually started to like it. I did notice that the longer flat area behind the trucks and the mellower nose and tail do give quicker pop without making the board any longer than a normal board as well. Higher
ollies/nollies are definitely easier with this board since you don’t need to pop as hard because of the quicker response time. It’s one of the better boards I have ridden in a while I must say.

So, is the quicker response time really that noticeable? Yes. Is the board really
worth the suggested retail price of $56.00? Well, not in my opinion. Maybe it
will be for you. Drop by your local skateshop and have a look for yourself.

10 Questions with Danny Falla

1. Alright everybody already knows last October you got the big P-R-O status over at 5BORO, but now that almost a year has gone by, how is the pro life treating you?

it’s been pretty good, went to Tampa Pro and i had a great time, got invited to RED BULL manny mania again n i had a great time also.  kids are supportive so i’m happy.

2. Do you think you get skateboarders recognizing you more, now that you’ve been getting more exposure?

Yeah i think so, they been chill

3. Lets change gears and get off the skateboard conversation for a minute. What are your top 3 things to do in Brooklyn when not skateboarding?

Go to Macarren park and lay on the grass and drink some vino.

Get coffee at this dope place by my house called gimme.

Ride my bike around the neighborhood

DANNY_FALLA

4. I know you’ve been traveling around, and even got to go back to your home country of Peru with 5B, whats been a good memory from a recent trip?

oh man, last time we went to Peru was so awesome, it wasn’t just the 5boro guys,  some homies came also and we had a great time,  soo many memories i can’t even think of just one, but one that comes to mind is when we went to the beach and ate some amazing sea food and drank beers and after went n skated this bowl right by it and Strubing was there shreddin hard as always and B Brown and the rest of the crew was just chillin drinkin beers and having a good time, good sesh

5. Feeling any pressure to come up big in the upcoming 5BORO video? Whose part are you looking forward to seeing most?

Yeah definitely feelin the pressure, specially cuz my ankle hasn’t been 100% lately.  i rolled it and its takin forever to heal.
i’m lookin forward to watch everybodys parts but i think Jimmy Mcdonald specially.

6. Is the ankle anything serious? Whats the worst injury you’ve taken in your days on a board?

The ankle is gettin better, slow but it is gettin better, i just went to acupuncture for it and its feelin much better, so we will see.
i’ve taken some bad ones but not really too crazy, thank god, no surgeries.  i hurt my testicles once real bad learning kf front board on a flatbar.
i was doin them every try n then i wanted to do one more b4 i left n i flipped wrong n i got nutted on my board n scratch one of my testicles and i had a wound the size of an eye under my testicles, couldnt sleep good for about a week.

7. Lets just say you never had been influenced by skateboarding, never even tried it in your life, where do you think you’d be at right now?

not in new york for sure, probably surfing in Peru.. thats a wild guess

8. Think you’ll ever go back to live in Peru? Any spots that really stood out while you were there?

oh yeah definitely,  i’m goin back to Peru every single year and maybe in the future i will be just stayin there all winter and coming to new york for the summer, the spot where the ES guys got jumped at, thats one of the most amazing spots ive ever skated. perfect pyramids,  little ones n big ones and a million ways to skate them.

9. I know your tight with Rodney, so I have to ask for a good story. What you got?

oh man i have some good stories of rodney, the good ones i can’t tell cuz he would be pissed and other people would be too, haha but maybe the latest one from new years.  i went to this bar where rodney told me he was goin to and he had been drinkin for hours so when i got there he was drunk as hell passed out at the bar and then people that he was with left so my girlfriend and i pretty much carried his ass like 15 blocks to our aprtment but on the way there we would pass people and they would laugh n say happy new year and we had no idea why they were laughin n rodney was so drunk he wasnt even talkin but the only thing he said was: pants! and we had no idea what he meant but then looked at his pants n they were down to his ankles n we didn’t know,  so we walked him a few blocks with his pants down,  that was pretty funny and then he woke up on my couch not knowing where he was but then he figured it out cuz i have his board hangin on my wall.

10. Who can you thank for the life your living? Advice for the kids?

thank my sponsors, my girlfriend meghan, my mom, my friends, you know who you are, and the sun god.

Make it Count: The Element Story – Chapter 1 WIND

Make It Happen: The Element Story

MAKE IT HAPPEN: THE ELEMENT STORY

Check out the 1st Chapter here: http://www.elementskateboards.com/makeitcount/film/

MAKE IT COUNT is a four-part documentary, which showcases Element’s defining moments and delves into its compelling story. From its humble beginnings, to a forward thinking global brand, this film covers two decades of stories and imagery.

In creating Chapter 1 of 4, “WIND” I followed Johnny Schillereff (Element founder & president) and dug into his history, interviewing the very people that have shaped his life and the company. The opening and closing sequences give you a small taste of the diverse community of people interviewed for the entire project, topics covered, and nostalgia that was un-earthed.

Each chapter of MAKE IT COUNT will be release on the 1st of each month:

WIND – August 1st, 2009

WATER – September 1st, 2009

FIRE – October 1st, 2009

EARTH – November 1st, 2009

Event Web Sites: www.xgames.com

Dates: July 30 – August 3, 2009 | Event Schedule

Location: Home Depot Center, Los Angeles, California

For X Games 15, ESPN will debut two new disciplines at X Games 15 Skateboard Big Air Rail Jam and Skateboard Park Legends. Skateboard Park Legends is jam-style competition on a fast-flowing course modeled after some of the best concrete skateparks in the world. The Legends field will feature an all-star line up of skateboard icons, from Christian Hosoi to Lance Mountain to Steve Caballero all skateboarders who continue to push the progression of skateboarding. Skateboard Big Air Rail Jam features a gap to rail element that will be added to the Big Air Ramp. Skaters will gap off the 50-foot Big Air kicker to a 20-foot long rainbow rail. Skaters will be judged on their best rail trick landed.

In addition to the two new disciplines, two events have been renamed for 2009. Moto X Racing will be renamed Super X where you will see the debut of racing icon, James Stewart, compete in his first X Games. Skateboard and BMX Freestyle SuperPark will be renamed to Skateboard Park and BMX Freestyle Park where you will see Rune Glifberg and Daniel Dhers defend their titles, respectively. Glifberg is one of the few athletes who will celebrate his 15th X Games having competed in every X Games since its inception in 1995. Moto X Freestyle keeps its same name, but will assume a new jam style format that will result in quicker scoring and face-paced freestyle competition.
