Wave House – Durban, South Africa
Wave House Durban is all about going big. The Tony Hawk-designed skatepark is the largest facility south of the equator -
58,000 square feet of bowls, ramps, a street plaza, an open flow area and a hybrid: all of it lit up at night, because Durban skaters just can’t get enough.
Wave House Durban was the first in the Wave House archipelago, and its double FlowBarrel® DRex is unique in the world – a right and a left barrel flowing directly at each other, so regular foots can perch in the barrel and throw shakas at their goofy foot friends in the left barrel.
The DRex is the center attraction at Wave House Durban – with the accent on action. Directly behind the DRex there is a lighted stage and directly in front of the DRex is an area that used to handle 5,000 crazed South African party animals. But the population of Durban party animals is increasing faster than the population of white rhino at the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, and Wave House Durban has expanded its space to accommodate 7,000 for flowboarding contests, skateboard contests, musical events and special events public and private.
Those 7,000 might come to watch some of the world’s best flowboarders on the DRex, or they might come for the musical events, like the Uprising Festival, which placed two dozen of Durban’s best bands center stage in the middle of the South African winter – in July of 2008.
Wave House Durban is expanding because people are coming: To ride waves, skate the ramps, listen to music, hang out, party, go shopping and just soak up one of Durban’s man-made wonders.
Wave House Durban is all about going big: double backflips on the DRex, 720s on the vert ramp, Durban’s best bands cranking it to 11 and letting the world know about the South African beat.
And now Wave House Durban is better equipped to handle all the sound and fury of South Africa’s finest, enjoying the Royal Palace of Youth Culture.
